To return to a
thing never not loved is
as warm as home.

the timid shark
bites once and retreats twice
flirts with strangers online
buries itself in seafoam light
doesn’t answer the phone
prowls the sea unarmed
spikes the punch at home
peers up at the gold

The dreamy elysian fields
I found myself in
drown in pitch
wrenched from the dregs
of this
ill-fated fortune-telling
that pulled us both down
eyes first
out of the rabbit hole
hands blind
to the heart in intent
you are

a ring of hearts

fumble as you will
with those keys on your ring of hearts

Why
should past conquests be
what keep us cloaked
from the chill of present insecurity
on low days
when we cannot accept
the smiles of lovers
as real?

The memories
can only ever bring
a whisper of comfort
in the power they give us to change
the past
for a shallow boost
that is granted much better
by chocolate.
